With the social distancing amid Coronavirus, the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) has been suspended until further notice. It is said that it can be dragged to a new window at the end of the year. ICC organizers have already planned ICC T20 World Cup 2020 in October. The question that arises in the minds of many is, if IPL 2020 will take place by the end of 2020 then when will ICC T20 Worl Cup be played?
The owners of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises have disclosed that the cash-rich league could be re-organized in place of ICC mega event and World Cup can be delayed as IPL can be played without spectators but a mega event like ICC T20 World Cup could not be dragged without the spectators.
Moreover, ICC will never organize the World Cup behind the closed doors. Selling of tickets for both; the league and the tournament is another mighty problem for both; IPL franchises and ICC as they will lose millions. The event like World Cup possesses millions of fans and spectators hence, the sale of tickets generate surplus amount of money. If there will be no money, how could an event be organized behind closed doors?
“It is also a dicey situation for the ICC management to organize big events when major tennis, football, and athletic events aren’t happening this year. So our understanding is simple. If at all cricket happens in autumn, it is got to be IPL for sure,” a team official said.
“So, IPL can happen without spectators and with the entire world getting hooked to TV once again and IPL viewing over 90 percent on TV, chances of hosting IPL are really bright. One thing is for sure, it is tough for World T20 to sustain without fans inside the stadium,” another official added.
