The coronavirus epidemic has paused cricketing activities around the world. All leagues, series, tours, and tournaments were either off call or postponed shortly. There was a league to be started, IPL which got disrupted. It was supposed to start on March 29, however, three more extensions of the lockdown postponed the cash-rich league indefinitely until further notice.

Mathew Hayden, a former opening batsman for the Australian team, has suggested to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to organize the Indian Premier League (IPL) behind closed doors amid the spread of the coronavirus.

He believes that Sri Lanka will be the best place to hold a cash-rich league. Earlier, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) had suggested to the BCCI to hold IPL on their nation that would provide all facilities, however, the Indian board declined to say so, there is no suggestion from the island country.

Matthew Hayden believes Sri Lanka could be the best place to hold the IPL behind closed doors without foreign players. It is to be noted that the availability of foreign players could be another major issue due to flight delays around the world. ۔ According to him, it would be better to organize the league without spectators instead of losing billions by canceling the league for sure.

“Certainly the IPL could take exist without foreign players. I think it would be a product that is being compromised naturally because foreign players do add a lot to the IPL. They raise the level of awareness and excitement among fans. Getting nations together has in fact made IPL the fun that it has been,” Mathew Hayden said as quoted by TOI.

“But in conditions like this, it could go on without foreign players and it should go on if all health issues have been uncompromised and the game can proceed in clean stadiums.”
